Uneconomical bus route in 12-month trial to be cancelled
ROUTE 507, introduced for a 12-month trial period, has failed to meet criteria to ensure its longevity, with only four passengers a day using the service.
Public transport has never been easy for Gladstonites, and it's about to become more difficult for morning commuters.
Emily Ferntre, who works at a chemist in the city, said the cancellation of the service was premature.
"We are a growing city that should be looking to improve public transport," she said.
"Why would anyone chose to take the bus if they thought the service was not guaranteed? It's just another blow to a public transport system that already sucks."
Route 507, which covers Aerodrome Rd and Stockland Shopping Centre through to the Gladstone CBD before 9am, has been determined as being too costly to maintain.
The State Government has announced the bus route will end on Friday, May 9.
It was a trial route that was introduced in March 2013.
Assistant Minister for Public Transport Steve Minnikin said the trial would continue for longer than originally expected, "but unfortunately since its inception the weekday morning peak bus service has averaged just four passengers per journey".
"This patronage is nowhere near sufficient to consider a taxpayer-subsidised public transport service, particularly in comparison to other public transport services in Gladstone," he said.
"Whilst public transport services need to provide and fulfil a community service obligation, they still need to provide value for money and operate cost-effectively.
"Unfortunately this is not the case for route 507, so we can no longer support it."
Route 507 passengers are encouraged to check the qconnect website for details of other bus routes and timetables from Monday, May 12.
Local bus company Buslink provides services in Gladstone for the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
Passengers are able to travel on other routes to their destination after 9am weekdays:
- Route 502 (from Seaview)
- Route 503 (from Emmadale Gardens and Telina)
- Route 504 (from New Auckland and Emmadale Park)
- Route 506 (from Carinya Park and Emmadale Park)
