Calliope Roosters get that winning feeling in trial match

CALLIOPE Roosters A-grade and reserve grade teams will go into the 2013 Gladstone Rugby League season with an early "winning feeling".

On Saturday the club invited the Rockhampton Norths to Calliope for a trial game, but also to foster a relationship between the traditional rivals.

Despite an impressive 48-6 win in front of a few hundred-strong crowd, Calliope Roosters' A-grade coach Russell Thomas said Norths was a formidable side.

"We're hoping to make it an annual event," he said.

Thomas said his forward pack led well and there were a few individual efforts worth noting, including rising talent Hayden Coy (hooker) and Mitch Hallinan (centre).

"It's a great mix of experience and youth," he said of his team.

With around 90% of the Calliope team new to each other this season, Thomas said the team would be doing some fine-tuning over the next few weeks until the local league kicks off.

"I think our discipline is something we need to look at in our execution," he said.

It was a good result for the Roosters in the reserves game as well.

Calliope Roosters reserves coach Ronnie Brown said 'because of the power outages that affected much of the Gladstone region the scoreboard stopped working but he thought the end result was around 34-14. "Defensively, I was very happy," he said of his team's efforts.

The Roosters' coaches said they hoped the size of the crowd would continue for the season and wanted to thank the committee, referees and Norths for making the game possible.
