Rollers through to the wheelchair basketball quarter-finals

THE Australian men's wheelchair basketball team, the Rollers, can now turn their sights to the quarter-finals.

Australia beat Japan 68-55 in their final group stage match on Tuesday morning, (Australian time) meaning their only loss was to Spain.

At this stage, it is unclear who they will play as it depends on other results. The game will be played either Wednesday night or Thursday morning (Australian time).

Tom O'Neill-Thorne, one of the team's Paralympic Games debutants, said the side was happy with the win.

"Especially going into the more serious end of the tournament so it was good to finish of the group stages with a win," he said.

O'Neill-Thorne said after the loss to Spain the team went back and reflected on what small improvements they had to make.

"I think it was more about defence and just the way we play that defence, we really wanted to fix that up," he said.

"We thought we weren't physical enough and so worked on that. "

The physicality of the Rollers was clearly on show during the 13 point win against Japan, with a number of heavy fouls committed by both teams.

The Rollers never really looked challenged for most of the game.

"We got out to an early lead at the start and just built from that, and that was definitely from our defence, " he said.
