A coffee with... fire inspector Barry Maluga
THIS week we have a coffee with Barry Maluga, QFES inspector and Gladstone Amateur Basketball Association president and life member.
Name: Barry Maluga.
Occupation: Inspector at QFES and Gladstone Amateur Basketball Association Inc president and life member.
Years lived in Gladstone: All my life.
What you love about where you live: Everything. It's a great place to raise the family, with good work options and choices. I've no intention of leaving.
How do you take your favourite drink? Cold and often. Generally a rum and coke sitting on the back verandah with a music DVD playing.
When I was young, my dream was to…be a country and western singer as a kid. That turned south.
I got an apprenticeship as a fitter and turner. But these days fire-fighting is a great lifestyle.
When I go out in Gladstone you'll find me…rock 'n' roll dancing at the bowls club.
My secret talent is…I used to do artistic skating but I also write. I have three books in mind, one that I've started.
My favourite holiday destination is…The Oaks at Facing Island. It's the best and it's right on our doorstep.
My grandkids…are something I can't live without. They're special. They call me Pa.
Carl Barron…would play me in the movie about my life. I have a very sharp wit. I have to keep it in check.
The best piece of wisdom I've been told is…when my brother and I wanted to start sailing, Dad said if we wanted to sail, we had to be active members in the club and go to the meetings.
And if you wanted to change things, you had to put your hand up to do so.
What are you spruiking? QFES - fire and road safety - always. On a community level, the redevelopment of Memorial Park on behalf of all five sporting groups and, of course, live life to the fullest.
