Rockets jolt Tel Aviv after ceasefire fails

ROCKETS are again penetrating the heart of Israel's most populated region after a ceasefire planned to coincide with the Egyptian prime minister's visit dramatically collapsed.

The AFP news agency said a rocket fired from Gaza had crashed into the sea off Tel Aviv on Friday, after sirens wailed across the city for a second consecutive day.

Later, air raid sirens also sounded in Jerusalem, and Israeli Army Radio said the alert was intended for Israeli towns near the holy city.

At least 20 Palestinians and three Israelis have been killed since Israel began its offensive on Wednesday, when it assassinated the head of the military wing of Hamas, Ahmed al-Jabari.

Egyptian prime minister Hisham Kandil has visited Gaza and called on Israel to stop its aerial bombardment of the Palestinian territory.
