Readers have say on how to reduce road toll

HUNDREDS of people are dying each year on our roads.

And to that can be added thousands more people who are seriously injured in crashes.

The fact is that a significant number of crashes can be avoided.

As you will see from our readers' suggestions, many factors come into play, and each one of them is the right answer.

Road conditions rate highly with many people, but the challenge for all drivers is to drive to the conditions.

So far this year, 157 people have died in 139 crashes on Queensland roads - and that's the lowest figure for the past five years.

But there's no room for complacency - there is always room for improvement.

Since the beginning of the year, 76 drivers and 35 passengers have died on the state's roads.

Twenty-six motorcyclists died and six cyclists. The remaining 14 were pedestrians.

Drink-driving was the major cause - 64 crash deaths, and that's a statistic which is on the rise.

Speed was involved in 47 of the fatalities, and fatigue accounted for 41.

The shocking numbers come when studying injury statistics.

While 2014 figures aren't available yet, in 2013 a massive 5652 crashes meant 6879 victims ended up in hospital.

The problem's not going to go away unless there's a massive change in culture.

P-platers get their fair share of criticism, with respondents citing hooning, skids, rapid acceleration and a host of other indiscretions.

But some of our more experienced drivers are not a great deal better - in fact we all need to improve.

Aaron Ryan: The speed limits on the highways should be raised and the roads made wider.

Jess Marsman: I think we should have zero tolerance for blood alcohol. There's too much of that around here.

Yvonne Strzelecki: People need to slow down. My mum had 15 car crashes in Sydney which were mostly due to rushing around.

Penny Clarke: I think people should get their cars taken off them. It's a privilege, not a right.

Tanya Fernance: Lower the speed limit in problem areas.

Joan Boot: Change the roads or put in four lanes with one lane just for trucks.

Craig Bond: Truckies are in too much of a hurry. They are under pressure from their boss to get from A to B.

Celia Pearson: Raise the legal driving age to 18.
