Rise in number of nation's youth accessing disability aid

YOUNG Australians are accessing more disability services, with more people under 25, a report from the COAG Reform Council has found.

The fourth report from the Council on the National Disability Agreement also found a rise in the use of Commonwealth job services.

While the report did not find major improvements across several indicators, it showed some progress.

Council chairman John Brumby said increasing use of disability services was welcome.

"One of the pleasing aspects of this is seeing all Australian governments working to provide services to deliver a better future for people with disability," he said.

"(But) there is still some way to go before people with disability have the same opportunities as other Australians."

The report showed there was a small decrease in the proportion of people receiving the Disability Support Pension who report earnings.

Carers of people with disability were also less likely to be employed than non-carers with more than half of working-age primary carers are in the labour force compared with almost 80% of non-carers.

"We found that despite some good work by governments, barriers still exist for Australians with disability," Mr Brumby said.
