Nauru riot cases wait after chief magistrate deported

A SERIES of cases involving a riot at the Nauru detention centre are awaiting a court hearing after the country deported its chief magistrate.

The ABC reported on Monday Nauru's president Baron Waqa had fired and deported chief magistrate Peter Law on Sunday.

Australian-based chief Justice Geoffrey Eames issued injunctions to try to stop the deportation, but had his own visa was cancelled.

Justice Eames claimed the decision was "politically motivated" and related to ruling by Mr Law which stopped Nauru from deporting three people, including two Australians.

He also said this week the Nauru court had planned to hear 60 cases involving asylum seekers accused of rioting.
