Revving up for plenty of fast and furious fun

DRAG RACING: Gladstone drag-racing fans are up for a treat of fast and furious speed action at the Benaraby Speedway this weekend.

Mark Harris will be in the thick of it with his 1990 VN Commodore The Grumpy Smurf.

"I have entered the Super Competition and will aim to run quicker than 8.99 seconds over the quarter mile," he said.

"It's quite an aggressive car that took a bit of sorting out with a 374 cubic inches Chevy engine and a 14/71 Super Charger and it can do 170mph (273km/h). "We hope to put on a good show on the day."

The Central Queensland Drag Racing Championships starts tonight with an Off St meet at 5pm for any interested in Drag Race, Street Car, Drag Car or Bike.

Rules apply but this is a chance for any wannabe drag racer to get out and have run at the quarter mile.

It also gives you a chance to race your mate and see who gets bragging rights.

On Saturday the real action starts with gates open at 10am and qualifying from noon.

Central Queensland Drag Racing Association president Col O'Connor said the competition would be strong this weekend.

"It will be a fairly full field of 70 odd races and the racers have accumulated points thoughout the year," he said.

There will be a mixture of cars and bikes from junior bikes to modified bikes.

The car categories include Street, Super Street, Comp and Super Comp.

Spectator admission starts at 11am with adults $20, members $15, children $15 (13-16 years old), children under 13 free with an accompanying adult, family $50 (two adults and two children).

CQDRA has a licensed drinking area with a full bar and catering on site and no glass or esky's allowed.
