Video: Cheerleading team out to excite Las Vegas
SEVEN cheerleaders from local club Revolution GymSports are ready to embark on the trip of a lifetime, heading to Las Vegas for the American Grand National Championship.
The girls have been training for the championship all year.
Getting prepared to leave on December 9 for the championships, which are on from December 12 to 14, coach Margaret-Mary Opstelten said the final touches were being put into the routine during the coming days.
"I don't know if I am excited or panicking," Opstelten said.
"We have never been to this one before. Last year we went to Hawaii," she said.
"We are just going to have fun and do the best we can."
The girls go in with a disadvantage, not having a full-sized training facility.
They train at Gladstone West State School, the best place available but still well under size.
"This facility is not big enough so we go outside to mark out and train on the proper-sized floor," Opstelten said.
But the team is used to overcoming adversity, having been together for the most part since they were in primary school.
Now all in their mid to late teens, the cheerleaders are ready to shock Las Vegas in the Pom Pom Dance, the only category they have entered.
The Revolution team finished fifth in Hawaii for the category, and member Kristyn Jacobsen, 16, thought it could equal or better that.
"Hawaii was very good experience for us," she said.
"This is much bigger and very different. Hopefully we can place in the top five."
