UPDATE: Some relief could be around the corner from Gladstone's shocking lack of retirement accommodation.

Gladstone Regional Council yesterday approved a development application that should see an extra 53 units added to Settlers Lifestyle Retirement Village in South Gladstone.

The region has been facing a chronic shortage of retirement accommodation recently and many elderly residents have been moving south to use the facilities in Bundaberg.

"Obviously we've got people moving to Bundaberg," Deputy Mayor Matt Burnett said.

"At least this (expansion) is giving them an option to stay in Gladstone."

Cr Burnett said the expansion would not solve Gladstone's accommodation shortage for the elderly.

"It helps, but it's not significant in terms of what is necessarily needed," he said.

The application is for an additional 53 units on a vacant block next to the current village.
