Rescuers abseil Uluru to rescue tourist trapped in crevice

RESCUE teams are abseiling down Uluru into a crevice to free a Taiwanese tourist who has been trapped for 20 hours.

The operation to rescue the man began at day break, after he spent the night trapped wearing only shorts and a t-shirt, while the temperature dropped to 6.2 degrees Celsius.

Northern Territory police said the man became trapped on top of Uluru about 3:00pm on Thursday after attempting to take a short cut.

Acting Senior Sergeant Drew Slape yesterday said the man was spotted by a search helicopter, but it was too late into the night for workers to carry out a rescue.

"Police, after communicating with the male and seeking assistance from the Northern Territory Emergency Services (NTES) vertical rescue team, determined that it was too dangerous to carry out the rescue as it was approaching night time," he said.
