Renovation throwdown: more tears than ever on The Block

TRADIES, tools, tantrums and tears - they're all common on The Block building site.

But host Scott Cam says there will be more waterworks than ever before in the 10th season of the reality renovation show, Triple Threat.

"It's one of the most traumatic Blocks in a long time," the Gold Logie winner tells APN.

"There will be a lot of tears.

"The guys ran out of money a lot earlier than normal. They were running out of coin early on and getting desperate.

"And of course they've been pushing themselves. With the stress of the budget and things going wrong, it's an intense 10 weeks for them."

Cam puts it down to the pressure-cooker environment of the 1960s South Yarra property, which will be transformed from 12 dingy units to four luxury apartments.

"It's an extremely challenging building even though it's not as big as the Glasshouse in terms of footprint," he says.

"It's a little bit more of a confined space with the same amount of tradesmen working in a smaller area. There's just a lot of work for a lot of people in a small area."

But, of course, the teams have to earn their spot on The Block proper first.

The show's producers have resurrected the elimination rounds, which will see six new teams culled to three.

Returning teams George and Bec, Matt and Kim and Deanne and Darren.

Then the three returning teams - Sky High's Bec and George and Matt and Kim and Glasshouse's Dee and Darren - will have to battle it out for the final, fourth spot.

Only the four final teams will reap the rewards at auction.

"I really dislike the eliminations a lot, but it's got to be done," Cam says.

"We need to put them under some pressure and establish if they're going to be able to do The Block for 10 weeks. It's no smoke and mirrors; it's just hard work."

Darren and Deanne Jolly, the most polarising Block couple in recent years, walked on to the Triple Threat set just six days after their disappointing Glasshouse auction.

"We just felt like it was a great opportunity to move on," Deanne says.

"We walked on site six days later and Glasshouse was history from that moment.

"Being tired and all of that was tough but we do love it; it's fun.

"We kept thinking if we said no and whoever took our spot came out with a good result then we'd always regret it."

The Block Triple Threat debuts on Tuesday at 7.30pm on Channel 9.
