Craig Ison's rescuer reliving bloody morning walk

A REGULAR morning walk turned into a frantic rescue for Reg Hulbert last Friday week.

The Evans Head resident was one of the four people who helped shark attack victim Craig Ison out of the water on that fateful day.

"It was about 10 past six in the morning, I saw two blokes struggling in the water," Mr Hulbert said.

"I asked 'what's the matter with your mate, is he all right'? He said, 'no, he's been bitten by a shark'.

"So I went in with him and got underneath his arms and pulled him up on the beach."

Mr Hulbert said four of them worked on Mr Ison to tourniquet his leg and arm with his leg rope and towels.

"I kept touching him on the face and talking to him, talking to him until the ambulance came," he said.

"I had blood over me and was shaking."

Mr Hulbert said he and one of the other men, local Ricky Forsyth, shook hands knowing they did the best they could.

"I had to walk all the way home to Airforce (Beach) with blood all over me," he said.

In the days after the attack, Mr Hulbert said memories of the experience keep coming back to him.

"I saw my doctor and he said it will affect me for a while," he said.

"He said to me to come back any time and 'we'll look after you'."
