Reflect on this special day and keep your loved ones close

TODAY is a special day, not just because it is one day closer to the weekend, or even closer to the Roosters' start to 2013 NRL glory.

No, today is a special day because it's my little sister's birthday.

I won't tell you how young she is as that is apparently rude, but what I will tell you is that she is another year older and for that we are forever grateful.

The last two years have been a kick in the guts for her and everyone else who battles breast cancer, but what I can say is that she is continuing her treatment and has her ups and downs, so today is a special day.

When she called me those many months ago to tell me what cards she had been dealt, she did it with tears in her voice.

But I knew this little sister of mine would battle the only way she knew how - hard, without any thought of losing.

That is why today is a special day.

But I knew this little sister of mine would battle the only way she knew how - hard, without any thought of losing.

As she lives many miles away in Sydney I'm sure she will be pampered with her own family there to celebrate another year older. I'll do it from afar knowing this is a special day.

You may have heard that actor Samuel Johnson is travelling around Australia on a unicycle hoping to raise a million dollars for breast cancer research.

He left Melbourne last week and says it will probably take him a year to do.

He's doing it for his sister Connie who's battling cancer herself, but unfortunately its terminal and they've given Connie maybe six months to live.

If you're thinking you're having a bad day, you're not - that's why today is special.

Special in the fact that our loved ones are here to share in life's ups and downs.

As you read this please spare a thought for someone who you haven't spoken to in a while.

You'll be surprised by the response I'm sure because today is special.

So, many happy returns and happy birthday to my beautiful little sister Katriona today. Yes, spelt with an O. That's because she's special to all the Kidds with two Ds!
