Reef avoids the tag of 'in danger'

UNESCO'S World Heritage Committee has left the Great Barrier Reef off its "in danger” list, but expressed "serious concern” about the reef's health and urged increased efforts to improve water quality.

The committee endorsed the Federal Government's Reef 2050 Plan - a series of measures designed to protect and manage the ecosystem.

Environment and Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg said the decision was a "big win for Australia”.

Climate Council scientist Professor Will Steffen said the Reef 2050 Plan did not tackle the real driver of damage to the reef (pictured) - climate change.

Queensland Environment Minister Steven Miles accused Mr Frydenberg of taking credit for measures that were largely due to the State Government.
