Reduced Drakes IGA trading hours here to stay
THE changes to the trading hours of Drakes IGA stores in Toolooa and Sun Valley look like being permanent this time.
An exemption issued to the stores has been revoked, meaning trading hours have once again been slashed.
In November, this newspaper revealed that chain of supermarkets was operating illegally for up to 10 hours every week.
Drakes IGA was trading underneath the classification of an independent retail chain, despite the number of staff and customers lifting their classification to be on a par with supermarket giants Woolworths and Coles.
The new change to trading hours means customers will need to wait until 8am on weekdays for the supermarket to open, and they must also finish their shopping before 5pm on Saturday afternoons.
Previously, the stores had opened at 7am from Monday through to Friday and remained open until 8pm on Saturdays.
"It's confusing and annoying," loyal customer Naomi Stinson said.
"I don't care so much that nowhere is open at 7am, but I don't finish work until 6pm on Saturdays, so every week I have to get takeaway. It's really frustrating."
The Queensland Industrial Relations Commission, which granted the exemption, was yesterday unable to provide further details.
Drakes IGA general manager Bob Song was unavailable for comment.
The stores are now open Monday to Friday 8am-9pm, Saturday 8am-5pm and Sunday 9am-6pm.
The Calliope IGA isn't affected by the change.
