Speech about red a winner for teenager
THREE Gladstone region youths were tasked to speak for several minutes, on drugs in sport and the colour red at the Gladstone Lions Youth of the Year regional finals on Saturday.
Biloela High School student Michael McLure, 16, was the overall and speech winner.
He will travel to Mooloolaba at the end of the month to compete in the district final.
Michael turned an impromptu speech about the colour red into an insightful speech about the colour spectrum, blood and emotions.
He said his love for science helped when speaking in front of the crowd of 20.
Michael was against fellow Biloela student Madeline Brewer, 17, and Toolooa State High School student Georgia Robertson, 17.
"Our school coordinator encouraged us to enter the Lions Youth of the Year.
"We've had many students compete in previous years, so it's good to keep it going," he said.
The three youths gave speeches that proved they were mature beyond their years.
Madeline spoke of the tireless community effort in Biloela to recover from ex-tropical cyclone Marcia.
While Georgia, a student who enjoys history, spoke about gender equality, with mention of the Australian nurses in World War I.
Boyne Island Lions Club member Anne Maree Rashleigh coordinated the event.
