LISTEN| Gladstone candidate's request for recount rejected

UPDATE:

The electoral commission has confirmed there will be no recount leaving Returning Officer Mark Larney free to declare the results this afternoon.

The eight councillors will be; Chris Trevor, Cindi Bush, Rick Hansen, PJ Sobhanian, Glenn Churchill, Desley O'Grady, Peter Masters and Kahn Goodluck.

EARLIER:

A RECOUNT is being considered for the Gladstone Regional Council elections after councillor candidate Alex Staines lodged a formal request.

Mr Staines, who polled ninth, told The Observer yesterday afternoon he was yet to decide whether to ask for a recount --- but hoped Electoral Commission Queensland would conduct a manual count of their own accord.

Early this morning the electoral commission said it was not considering a recount, however The Observer has since learned Mr Staines lodged a formal request yesterday evening.

ECQ Returning Officer Mark Larney --- who was intending to declare the results today --- says he is waiting for advice from the commissioner on whether the ballots will be recounted.

We spoke to Mr Staines about why he lodged the request.

A recount has also been requested in Mackay and electoral commission told the Mackay Daily Mercury a recount could take up to 10 days.

"It is important to remember that local government elections are conducted by the commission on a cost recovery basis, meaning the costs of elections are passed on directly to a council's ratepayers," Electoral Commission Queensland assistant director Carrick Brough told the Mackay Mercury.

"Accordingly the Commission will very carefully consider requests, bearing in mind the ultimate cost to ratepayers."
