Commenting on The Observer Facebook page, some residents asked what passengers would do in town.
"Poor, poor passengers. What on earth are they going to do here? Shop at Target Country? Picnic at Barney Point?" Rochelle Liggins asked.
However, plenty of commenters leapt to the defence of Gladstone, pointing out a long list of places of interest.
"Having been on many cruises, the opportunity for regional businesses to benefit are endless," Jo Atkinson said.
"You would be surprised what visitors will be prepared to pay for and are motivated to see in our region."
Karly Rachelle suggested Gecko Valley Winery, Tondoon Botanical Gardens, lookouts overlooking Gladstone's industry, Gladstone Marina, East Shores, Tannum Sands and Agnes Water as places passengers would be keen to visit.
