Reader letter: Not a fan of Kirkwood shopping plans

Letter to the editor from Greg Clifford, of Wurdong Heights.

THE Walker Group appears to be grasping at straws (Big new shopping centre proposed for Kirkwood).

What once was mooted as even more housing in yet another half-finished estate is to be rezoned so as to provide what?

Another hardware store? Like Masters maybe? To compete with Bunnings just a few kilometres away, and then what?

Another service station? To compete with the one that's across the road next to the third McDonalds?

And maybe another gym? Because Gladstone only has five or maybe six, one of which is, you guessed it, right across the road from the proposed development.

Hey, here's an idea, what about another furniture store so they can go bust against Harvey Norman while they all compete for the savings of a town that is in decline thanks to a poorly managed council and corporate greed?

Or maybe they'll put in an indoor entertainment facility for children like the one next to the tenpin bowling alley which closed.

Hey I know, why doesn't some savvy developer build a shopping centre at Glen Eden... Oh wait, that was last decade wasn't it?

I wonder what happened to that? Probably the same thing that happened to the plans for a new shopping centre at Riverstone Rise, alongside the proposed medical centre and school.

When I read this rubbish in the local rag I had to make sure it wasn't April 1 all over again.

If the council was proactive towards trying to keep retail spending in Gladstone it would have done something a long, long, long time ago.

This is just more clap trap meat for the grinder that is this forgotten city.
