Ranieri keeping a lid on Leicester's hopes in Europe

FOOTBALL: Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri is not getting carried away despite his side easily winning its first Champions League game.

The English Premier League champion defeated Belgium's Club Brugge 3-0 with two goals from Riyad Mahrez, following an opener from Marc Albrighton.

Ranieri was under no illusions about how difficult the competition would be, saying Leicester would not win the Champions League, but he added that every game would be good for his players.

"I said from the beginning the Champions League will be an experience for us - we hope to get through and play again,” Ranieri said.

"But if not, we want to get in the Europa League - that's the target.

"We've just played the first match; there's another five to go.

"We have taken confidence.

"But let's stay calm. It wasn't easy. If they'd scored early it would have changed the match.”

Manchester City also got off to a comfortable winning start with a 4-0 home success over Borussia Monchengladbach at the Etihad Stadium.

Postponed from the previous night because of a waterlogged pitch, City was too good for the German outfit with Sergio Aguero scoring a hat-trick.

Substitute Kelechi Iheanacho completed the scoring, firing in from 12 yards in a romp for Pep Guardiola's men.

Spurs are playing at the national stadium while White Hart Lane is getting a facelift but despite a crowd of 85,011 at Wembley - the highest ever home attendance for an English club - Spurs could not come up with the goods, losing 2-1 to French Ligue 1 leader Monaco.

Real Madrid left it late to defeat Sporting Lisbon at home with a Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick and a header from Alvaro Morata turning round a 1-0 defecit.

Both Madrid's goals came in the final two minutes after Bruno Cesar had given the visitors the lead.
