Monaco on the Coffs coast

RALLY Australia general manager Michael Masi has a vision that Coffs Harbour could become to rally what Monaco is to Formula One: the ultimate in world-class motorsport by the sea.

With the World Rally Championship event's ‘Super Special' stages to be held on the Jetty Foreshores from September 8-11, Mr Masi says it will be the only “uniquely ocean-sided rally” of the series.

“I can just imagine it now – the harbour packed with yachts and vessels and spectators on the jetty foreshores soaking up the action of Rally Australia,” he said after launching the rally routes yesterday to a packed media contingent.

“For the spectators, the super special stages on the waterfront at the Coffs Harbour Jetty will be the most in-your-face rally experience imaginable.”

As a showcase of the Coffs Coast, Rally Australia will be beamed to an estimated global television audience of 53 million viewers.

Up to 85,000 visitors to the region are expected and the largest crowds will be seen at the harbour with the world rally event to start and end on the waterfront ahead of the Sunday afternoon podium presentation.

The first of the nightly super special stages will be held around the harbour on September 8.

Daytime stages on all-gravel shire and forestry roads will move to the Orara Valley on the Friday, south to the Nambucca Valley on Saturday and conclude with the “power stages” on Sunday west of Woolgoolga to Upper Corindi.
