Raiders stay in touch with top eight after win

CANBERRA have kept their slim finals hopes alive following a 36-16 win over a hapless Warriors outfit on Sunday.

The match was a close affair for the first 60 minutes, before the Raiders powered home in wet conditions in front of 10,182 fans at Mt Smart Stadium.

The result means Ricky Stuart's Green Machine remains in 10th on the ladder, four points out of the top eight.

Their task gets harder next week, however, when they take on Penrith who have won six consecutive matches.

As for the Warriors, they gave a much better account of themselves a week after Stephen Kearney accused some of his stars for not trying against Newcastle, but the loss is now their sixth straight.

The Raiders' left edge caused all sorts of a havoc early on and they scored first points when Jarrod Croker put Nick Cotric over in the corner in the seventh minute.

Cotric soon returned the favour when he put his skipper over for a 12-point lead.

Kieran Foran's stand-in playmaker Ata Hingano sparked the Warriors in the 26th minute with a linebreak and offload which resulted in a David Fusitua four-pointer.

The visitors hit back before the break when Blake Austin fooled the Warriors' defence with a classic dummy and run.

A Luke Bateman error put the Raiders under pressure straight after halftime, but it took until the 56th minute for the Warriors to score when Roger Tuivasa-Sheck barged over in the corner thanks to some lovely lead-up play from Hingano.

The home side undid their good work midway through the half with a Ken Maumalo error which soon led to Elliott Whitehead putting Joey Leilua over.

A Jordan Rapana try just five minutes later gave the Raiders a 30-10 lead before Cotric bagged his second meat pie of the day with an evasic run which left the Warriors' defence found wanting.

The Warriors grabbed a late consolation try through young forward Isaiah Papali'i, but the result belonged to the visitors.
