OPINION: It's a dreaded time of year, Christmas countdown

THE signs are everywhere and I can no longer ignore them.

They're telling me I've reached that part of the year I dread the most - the countdown to Christmas.

It's not Christmas itself I dislike. Far from it. I have great plans - this year and every year.

It's more the jolting reminder that, when it comes to putting those plans into action, I've almost reached the point of no return.

That low point of the year when you suddenly realise it's already November; even though you were sure that, surely only yesterday, it was the start of August and you were revelling in the luxury of the months of planning time that stretched ahead.

But no. Church fair signs sprout by the roadside overnight, shops suddenly overflow with festive offerings, there are invitations to Christmas parties and carols nights and the first poinciana flowers are already on the trees.

Visions of joining in the Christmas Eve carols in a state of totally organised bliss fade faster than the memory of those precious August planning days I squandered so freely.

Once again the race is on to fit it all in.

Experts have written volumes on how to handle the Christmas countdown and stay calm, but has anyone out there actually achieved this goal?

Last year, in this column, I mused over the feasibility of getting a life coach for Christmas.

I should have done that in August!
