Quick thinking driver saves cab from trailer blaze

A QUICK-THINKING truck driver risked injury to save his cab, disconnecting it from a trailer full of oil while it was engulfed in 30-metre-high flames.

The truckie noticed a fire had started in the trailer of his heavy vehicle while in a parking bay on the Sturt Highway near Truro at about 1.15am on Wednesday morning.

Police say he swiftly uncoupled the cab and the trailer, which was carrying 25,000 litres of oil, and drove to safety - without injury.

CFS fire crews arrived shortly after to battle the blaze, which had spread to nearby by grass, scorching two hectares.

About 70 firefighters contained the blaze but will remain on-site to monitor the situation into the morning.

One lane on the highway was closed but has since reopened.

The fire caused $100,000 damage to the truck and $200,000 damage to its stock.
