Over-40s Origin to be a thriller
IT may be a different form of Origin footy, but it will be no less thrilling when the Queensland over-40s touch footy team travels to Coffs Harbour on June 22.
Marley Brown Oval played host to the team’s first non-Brisbane based camp in donkey’s years as the team prepares for the State of Origin clash with NSW.
With Mayor Gail Sellers and GDRL president Glenn Butcher on hand, the state team dusted BITS 8-3 in a practice match after a rigorous training session, leaving Gladstone-based coach Laurie Anno in high spirits ahead of their southern sojourn.
“The boys enjoyed the facilities here at Marley Brown; because we’re five weeks out the guys are switching on and we really want to give it to NSW,” Anno said.
“With all the hype surrounding the rugby league State of Origin they really want to put a big effort in.”
Gladstone Razorbacks Fred Roeser, Linden Finlay and Mark Marsh (over-45s) featured in the home camp and can’t wait to hit the ground running in Coffs Harbour.
“It’s a great feeling to go down there and kick NSW butt as a representative of Gladstone and Queensland,” Finlay said.
Cr Sellers presented the side with team caps and was given a signed team jersey by Anno.
