QAL responds to concerns about water quality near dam

QAL has responded to concerns about water quality in South Trees Inlet raised in a report by the Department for Environment and Heritage Protection.

The report called for further investigation of a possible connection between high levels of aluminium in the area and discharge from QAL's Red Mud Dam.

"QAL utilises the seawater neutralisation process for its red mud," a QAL spokesperson said.

"This process is considered industry best practice for neutralising red mud, and managing the ecological risk of discharge waters.

"It is employed by some other alumina refineries around the world that have access to seawater.

"For over 40 years QAL has used seawater to neutralise red mud for storage in the Residue Disposal Area on Boyne Island.

"The overflow from the dam discharges into South Trees Inlet and is regulated as part of QAL's Development Approval issued by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection."
