Readers debate punishments for repeat drug offenders

A MAGISTRATE'S scathing attack on a convicted drug user led some of our readers to call for harsher sentencing for repeat offenders including jail terms.

Gladstone's Michael James Kemp pleaded guilty to possessing the drug ice when police found the substance in his car on May 17.

And although some Facebookers thought harsher punishments were the answer, others called for more support for people struggling with addiction or drug use.

Tammy Ellem commented passionately, saying her uncle had problems with the drug and said each person should take responsibility for their own choices.

"Anyone sent to jail over drugs should spend the whole time in jail then when they are released they should have an ankle strap where police can keep track of their every move," she wrote.

"Might sound harsh but if you give anyone an inch they will always take a mile."

She said drug users shouldn't be made out to be victims because using was ultimately their choice.
