OPINION: Paying people smugglers is like paying murderers
This was submitted as a letter to the editor by Gladstone resident Brian Farber.
BOTH the present and previous governments have branded people smuggling as a crime and have vowed to prosecute any transgressors.
It therefore surely follows that to pay people smugglers to return refugees back to Indonesia must be branded as aiding and abetting the execution of a crime.
I invite your readers to compare this situation with paying someone to commit murder where both parties are considered equally guilty.
I will not be implicated as an accessory to a criminal act and therefore, by this public letter, I hereby withdraw my participation in Team Australia.
I express my hope that Tony Abbott and those who have acted criminally in his government will be called to account by Australia's legal system.
My view expressed here is non-partisan - I would express the same opinion no matter which party was in government.
