Public flocks to board meet

THE public took the invitation to sit in on the third Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service (CQHHS) board meeting last Friday.

With the first two meetings kept under wraps, CQHHS deputy chairman Charles Warne said it was important the board remained transparent.

"We've got nothing to hide. When we settle down a bit more we will be communicating all the outcomes from the board decisions on our website," Mr Warne said.

"People will know exactly what's going on."

More than 50 people flocked to the open forum, which had newly appointed chief executive Maree Geraghty introduce the seven members before passing to CQ Medicare Local board chairman Bruce Elliot.

CQHHS and the new Central Queensland Medicare Local board will work to ensure all areas of health concern are addressed in the community. One of CQML's functions is to alleviate the pressures of public hospitals by providing patient access to primary care facilities.

"We partner together and have to work together to make sure we're looking after the health of central Queenslanders," Mr Elliot said.

After the formalities, Ms Geraghty opened the floor for questions. Many past and present serving medical professionals, councillors and members of the public voiced their concerns.

Gladstone GP Dr John Bird delivered an emotive speech about his concerns regarding primary patient care and said shifting the blame to Rockhampton wasn't acceptable in a town like Gladstone.

Gladstone Regional Councillor Maxine Brushe, who was in attendance at the forum, dismissed the State Government's perception that money generated from industry in Gladstone would be injected into the local economy.

Ms Geraghty said it was important that the community and the board worked together.
