THE death of a 58-year-old man at the back of a Drayton pub is being treated by police as suspicious.

Officers were called to the Drayton Tavern in Brisbane St about 7.20am yesterday after the body of the man, believed to be a co-manager of the business, was found at the bottom of a rear stairwell.

He had sustained head injuries.

Darling Downs district officer Detective Acting Inspector Paul Hart said police were working to determine what had happened.

"We have to look at, obviously, the scene, the location in which it has happened and speak to any other potential witnesses that have been around at the time," Insp Hart said.

He said it was difficult to say how long the man had been dead.

"We are obviously going to get special forensic police to examine the scene more thoroughly, so at this stage it is really too early to determine what has happened."

The cause of the man's death was the subject of intense investigation.

"In these circumstances we really can't rule anything out.

"It could be anything from a suspicious death right through to a tragic accident but as I said, it is too early to say."

Anyone with information can phone Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
