Thieves stealing lawn ornaments from retirement villages
MACKAY detectives have identified a number of suspects they believe to be involved with the theft of multiple garden ornaments from two retirement villages.
At least 10 items had been reported as being stolen from the Carlyle Gardens Retirement Village and Palmview Village over the weekend of August 8 and 9.
Detective Senior Constable Steven Brooks said police had since recovered some of the items, which have been returned to the owners.
Det Snr Const Brooks said the items had been recovered after police received information from the public in relation to vehicles seen in the locations at the times the items were taken.
Have you been a victim of theft?
This poll ended on 18 August 2015.
This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.
Mackay officers have been able to identify people of interest, he said.
"It's certainly different to what we do commonly see," Det Snr Const Brooks said. "It sort of begs the question as to why someone would want to steal those particular items from elderly people."
In 2015 there have been 20 reported thefts of garden ornaments, pot plants and outdoor furniture in the Mackay district.
And it's not just retirement villages that have been targeted with thefts occurring from childcare centres, hotels, vacant houses, businesses, townhouses, a police spokesperson said.
Mackay police have offered these tips for keeping your ornaments safe: fix them in place to a concrete block or take photos and give the items an identification mark and place it in clear view of the house or main road so any stealing attempts are visible.
