Promising Powerful signs for Gladstone

GLADSTONE Port City Power under 14 boys and girls finished in 14th and last place respectively at the Queensland State Basketball Championships.

The girls were much more competitive on day's three and four - losing to Mackay Meteorettes 51-49 and Northside Wizards 49-40.

Darcie Arnold shone against Mackay with 19 points while Lucia Perez De Guzman shot 11.

Lucia was among the points again against Wizards with 14 and Darcie got 10.

Despite finishing in last place in the division one-ranked competition; there were plenty of positives and most notably was the vast improvement in the final two matches.

Townsville Flames took out the championships with a 56-41 win over Gold Coast Waves.

The boy's Power side finished off its division two campaign with a 61-55 loss against Caboolture Suns.

Gladstone looked like losing big time and not having gun players Haizyn Mellars and Thasindu Chandrasekara did not help its cause.

But the Power rallied after trailing by 17 points in the final quarter.

Jack Small (13 points), Ben Knight and Albert Maunga, with 13 as well, sparked Gladstone with a wet sail finish which forced an agitated Suns coach to force a time-out.

Thasindu was outstanding in the seven matches he played with an average of just under 16 points while Haizyn averaged 11 points per game in the six matches he played.

Gladstone's solid tournament augers well for coach Duane Barrenger and his troops for the next championships in 2017 with the core group of players to remain in the age division.

Southern Districts Titans won the division two grand final with a 59-57 win against PCYC Redlands Pride.
