Former NRL star helps push for kids' sport group
FORMER Cowboys and Knights star Steve Southern helped children's sport education group League and Learn kick off its campaign for a Gladstone base on Saturday.
The Brisbane-based group teaches basic sport skills and co-ordination through games and fun activities.
Zoe Chesters is League and Learn's Gladstone co-ordinator, and she was pleased with the response her stall received on Saturday at the Beach Arts and Music festival in Tannum Sands.
"We headed down to BAM to tell everyone about our program, and had a lot of people come by," she said.
League and Learn focuses on providing options for kids who are pre-school age and are too young to join junior league.
"We teach them the basic rules of the game, as well as early development skills that are important for all children," she said.
"They learn to listen, take direction, socialise and work together as well as a lot of core skills they need for other sports and early development."
These include number and colour recognition, hand-and-eye co-ordination, and motor skills, Ms Chesters said.
"If you can get them into good healthy habits you're setting them up for life," Ms Chesters said.
