Junior queens crowned as festival celebrations kick off

THE winners of the Junior Queen Quest were crowned at the QGC Opening Night Celebrations on Sunday.

Gladstone Festival and Events general manager Michelle Stafford said there had been 16 entrants.

"It was great. The kids get so much out of it confidence-wise," she said.

Taking out the title of junior queen was 11-year-old Mackenzie Price, the princess winner was Ellie Wyatt, 9, and junior princess was awarded to Paige Stokes, 6.

It was the first time all three girls had competed in the quest and all said they would encourage others to take part.

Mackenzie entered at the last minute after her best friend suggested it. She said she enjoyed being backstage with her friends and how all the entrants congratulated one another.

"It feels rewarding and you feel like you've achieved something," she said.

Ellie had a great time in the quest. Her aunt visited to help her get ready and she wore a dress from America.

Paige also enjoyed getting ready for the quest and said it was both exciting and nerve-wracking when her name was called out.

"It was fun going on stage and everyone was clapping and yelling," she said.

Ms Stafford said it was disappointing that there wasn't a teen queen or queen this year due to a lack of entrants.

"We would dearly love to bring back the categories for next year," she said.

People should put their name down with the Gladstone Festival and Events office to show their interest in entering next year's quest.
