Pregnant woman branded an 'animal' for spitting on police

A PREGNANT woman was told she behaved like an animal when she faced court for spitting on an Ipswich police officer.

African-born Rhoda Majak (pictured) spat on a policeman when officers attended a Brassall address she was at in relation to a domestic disturbance.

As part of their investigation, the police asked for Majak's name but the then 17-year-old refused to answer.

Instead she repeatedly swore at the officers and told them to leave her alone.

When she was arrested, Majak spat on a policeman's arm as she walked past him.

As a consequence, the now 18-year-old was charged with serious assault.

When she appeared in Ipswich Magistrates Court this week to plead guilty to the crime, Magistrate Barry Cosgrove had some stern words for her.

"Spitting on people is degrading, disgusting, animal-type behaviour," Mr Cosgrove told the teenager.

"The police are human beings just like everybody else and they should not have to be spat on, kicked or sworn at as they go about their business."

Mr Cosgrove explained that because the police were put on the frontline and put at risk the law treated any assault on a police officer more seriously.

Defence lawyer Dylan Hans said Majak was in the late stages of pregnancy with her first child and had written a letter of apology to the officer she spat on.

Mr Hans said his client had a criminal history but had stayed out of trouble for the past six months.

He also told the court Majak had had a traumatic upbringing.

In addition to the serious assault, which took place on September 29, 2014, Majak was also charged with contravening a police direction and breaching a bail condition.

She was convicted and sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for 18 months. She was also fined $300.
