Pregnant and nowhere to call home

THEY should be flicking through baby books and picking out strollers, but these young mums are just trying to keep a roof over their heads.

As part of Capricorn Training Company's Youth Services, the Youth Housing and Reintegration Service is helping six young mums-to-be who have nowhere to call home.

CTC's Transitions Manager Jenny Smith said the number of young women who were coming to them for support had been increasing in the past two to three years.

"Overall for the last year we supported around 22 young parents who either had young children or were pregnant and about to give birth," she said.

"Sometimes kids make the sensible choice to leave (home), particularly where there might be domestic violence or they are otherwise unsafe."

Ms Smith said other young people may leave home because of family "blow ups" or mental health issues.

The key to helping, she said, was to make sure the people they help didn't end up reliant on their services.

"It's all about supporting them to get into safe, secure and stable accommodation...we immediatly address the issue of homelessness, then the reintegration part of the program is about supporting them to reconnect with family," she said.

"Reconnecting them with school, if they are of that age, or some sort of training or employment; housing may be the immediate issue but we look beyond that."

CTC CEO Darryl Lapworth said even a small success was a big win to the team.

"We came together well around education and we think that is one of the key factors that will help solve or break this cycle," he said.
