Barney Pt home gutted in blaze
A HOUSE in Callide Street in the heart of Barney Point went up in flames early yesterday morning.
Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) received the call at 5.20am and sent one unit from the Gladstone base.
Gladstone Station Officer Barry Maluga said that on arrival the house was “well involved”.
“We had to call two more units for back-up and three crews were masked with breathing apparatus to fight the fire,” Officer Maluga said.
Fire crews were unable to gain access to the house due to the intensity of the flames.
There were no occupants in the house at the time of the incident and QFRS have said that fire was isolated.
It took fire crews about 1 1/2 hours to get the flames under control.
“Everything was severely damaged and the house completely destroyed,” Officer Maluga said.
Ergon Energy also received a call out and dispatched to Barney Point to isolate and make the area safe.
Communications manager Robert Pleash said the power was interrupted and caused an upstream problem in the vicinity.
“There were powerlines down and 32 customers in the area were affected,” Mr Pleash said.
“The crews repaired the damages and everyone was back online just before 8am.”
Gladstone Police are still undergoing investigations into the cause of the fire.
