Power ready to inflict basketball capital punishment on Brisbane

MCDONALDS Gladstone Port City Power women face a moment of truth against a side that is ‘on equal par’ in a game that may determine if it is in the mix for a finals berth.

The Power enjoyed a week’s break, but with a 3-6 win-loss record, the amount of games are running out to square the ledger and captain Maddy Willey can sense it. “We can’t really afford to drop any games and Brisbane have a couple guards who do most of the scoring,” Willey said.

She referred to Heidi Freeburn and Amy Lewis who both scored 18 and 19 points respectively in last week’s win against Logan.

“Kerah Nelson and Markel Walker will have them,” Willey said.

“Brisbane have a guard-heavy team and going from previous years, they have a some smart bigger girls who give openings for their shooters.”

As for her own form, the skipper said she has been ‘pretty happy’, but demands others to step up and help out the likes of Nelson and Walker.

The Brisbane men’s side are cruising at 8-3, but found a stumbling block last weekend when Logan did a number to win 95-78.

New Power coach Blair Smith said the result gives his team plenty of encouragement given that the Power led Logan a merry dance in the first half a fortnight ago before collapsing.

“We ran Logan off their feet in the first half before Logan slowed it down and that’s how they beat Brisbane,” Smith said.

Add to that, Gladstone will welcome back play-maker Yassine Ghomari from a calf and big man Marvin Williams (knee).

“The key for us is to look after the ball because Brisbane play a high-energy and tempo style of basketball and they like to get it up the lanes,” Smith said.

“We’re well prepared and have had two good training sessions. We really need to win all of our games and destiny is in our hands.”

The Power face most sides that are in its pool in the remaining six matches.
