Power girls finish State Champs on a high

BASKETBALL: The results didn't go their way but the Gladstone Port City Power Under-18 Girls side ended its State Championship campaign on a high.

The Power girls finished the tournament in 13th after cruising to a 65-34 victory over Redlands Pride in a play-off match.

The 31-point win was a fitting reward for the girls, who never surrendered despite failing to win a match prior to the 13th/14th place decider.

Power coach James Lamkin was pleased with the progression his side demonstrated on the Sunshine Coast, considering the team hadn't held a proper training session before heading south.

"The big consistent thing throughout the week was the learning and development the girls showed from the first game through to the last game,” Lamkin said.

"It was a team taken from four different towns - Gladstone, Yeppoon, Bundaberg and Hervey Bay - so the girls didn't really know each other and it was tough to get preparation and training done.

"We'd never had a training session with the full team together and the first time they were all on the court was the first game.

"Obviously it was tough because a lot of those teams have been together for years, but the girls played tough and effort was strong throughout.”

Lamkin kept the girls' spirits high despite being on the end of some lopsided scorelines during the pool stages.

"We put a big focus on development and improvement and making sure they understood where they were improving so they could see it's not all about the end result,” he said.

"It's more about those small victories in the game.

"No matter how down they were they didn't drop their heads, kept playing hard and showed good resolve.”

It all culminated with a hard-fought play-off victory against Redlands.

"They came out a little bit flat after playing eight games in four days,” Lamkin said.

"They got down 5-0 and then out of a timeout they just decided they were going to put in the effort no matter how tired they felt.

"Then went on a 16-2 run and pretty much took over the game from there.”
