Port city’s coal a link to home for Korean Monday Male

KOREAN man Yong Kim has lived in Gladstone for the past two and a half years, where he works as a fitter and turner for local business Purcell's Engineering.

Softly spoken and thoughtful, the married 33- year-old man loves swimming, running, and playing with animals and children.

"I had a dog from very young, usually two or three dogs in my house. They were my best friends," he said.

"Sometimes I can't sleep without them (nearby)."

Recently, Yong started lifting weights, because he wants to be strong enough to lift his friend's children, who are getting heavier as they get older.

Yong is from Pohang, a port town in Korea with nine iron refineries owned by Hyundai and by steel-making giant Posco.

Korea is the world's third largest importer of coal, with coal ships bound for the Asian nation often leaving Gladstone Port.
