Wanderers coach praises ban on fans

TONY Popovic had been reluctant to weigh in, but he broke his silence yesterday in praising Football Federation Australia and the Western Sydney Wanderers for taking a strong stance against anti-social behaviour.

The FFA fined the Wanderers $20,000 after some of the club's fans displayed a crude and unauthorised banner during last weekend's Sydney derby.

The club has suspended 14 fans responsible for the banner and those same fans will be banned by the FFA.

While Popovic refused to comment on his club escaping a points deduction, the Wanderers coach took aim at the fans' behaviour.

"It's important we stamp that out and that's what we're trying to do," he said.

"It's not just our club that's trying to do that. In any code, in any walk of life, that's the challenge we all have.

"It's a challenge presented for us, a challenge for the league, and we're doing the very best to stamp that out.

"I think there's been a fantastic stance by the club and the FFA this week and we've got to move on with it.

"We've got our values at our football club. We've got fantastic fans.

"I think it's been made clear there's no room for anti-social behaviour in football or in sport, or anywhere in general, and I think we've got to leave it at that and talk about the football."

Popovic said it was a shame the incident had overshadowed the Wanderers' shock win over the Sky Blues.

The Wanderers travel to Perth for Saturday night's clash looking to pick up the winning momentum they lost during the week when heavily beaten in the Asian Champions League.
