Politician proposes ‘mandatory vasectomy’ law

A POLITICIAN in the US is ruffling feathers with a new proposal to fight tough abortion laws.

Democrat Rolanda Hollis has introduced a bill that would require men to have a mandatory vasectomies in the state of Alabama.

Once men reach the age of 50 or had three children they would be required to undergo the procedure.

"This measure would require a man to undergo a vasectomy within one month of his 50th birthday or the birth of his third biological child, whichever comes first," the bill proposes.

Ms Hollis introduced the idea after she grew sick of her colleagues attempting to impose a strict ban on abortions.

Last year the state introduced a controversial ban to the termination of pregnancy. A federal judge has since blocked that bill.

"We can't put all the responsibility on women. Men need to be responsible also," Hollis said.

She said men should not legislate what women can do with their bodies. There are no laws in the state that restrict male reproduction.

"The vasectomy bill is to help with the reproductive system and, yes, it is to neutralise the abortion ban bill," Ms Hollis said.

The odds of the state passing the legislation are slim, which Ms Hollis has accepted. She said she drafted the proposal to bring attention to the unfairness of recent state laws targeting women.

"It takes two to tango," Hollis said.
