UPDATE: Minor flooding has forced police to close streets across Toowoomba as heavy rain continues to fall.

Sections of South St, Mackenzie St, Long St and Bridge St have been closed due to localised flooding.

Police are urging motorists not to drive through floodwaters.

The rain is expected to persist for most of today before clearing tomorrow.

9.30AM: Police are reminding drivers that if it's flooded, forget it, as the forecast heavy rains continue across Toowoomba.

There have been reports of water over the roads around the city including around Lake Annand.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Vinord Anand said rains were expected to continue today before clearing tomorrow and Sunday.

"We have seen quite a bit of rain in the last 24 hours around southern Queensland," he said.

"There hasn't been much in Toowoomba itself, but we expect the rain to continue for most of the day."

Mr Anand said the weather system, which had delivered just 12mm of rain to 9am today, would move toward the coast, making for a clear Saturday and Sunday.

"The weather system will contract offshore later today and during the evening," he said.

"But there is still a chance of possible showers and a chance of a thunderstorm."

While the weekend will be clearer, Monday was set see a return of the rain, Mr Anand said.

He said temperatures would also climb back toward the low 30-degree range over the weekend and into Monday.

The widespread rainfall across much of Queensland has prompted RACQ to issue a plea to drivers over the Australia Day long weekend, asking them to plan ahead and drive to the conditions.

Spokesman Joe Fitzgerald said the potential for flash flooding and road closures emphasised the importance of motorists paying attention to road conditions and adapting their driving accordingly.

"Motorists planning a road strip over the long weekend should take precautions to ensure they arrive at their destination safely," he said.
