Man rams car, throws punch and jumps in creek to avoid cops
POLICE officers waded through mud and mangroves to catch a suspicious man in a bizarre afternoon foot chase.
A routine licensed premises walk-through at the Waterfront Hotel at Diddillibah turned into a manhunt after police approached a man acting suspiciously.
Senior Constable Jo Moore said the 20-year-old man and his friend bolted from the hotel and jumped into a car.
In their rush to leave they rammed a police car as they reversed.
The driver ran, but the 20-year-old struggled with police.
He threw a punch but did not connect.
Then the chase was on.
The man took off his shirt and jumped into Eudlo Creek, a tributary of the Maroochy River, in an attempt to avoid police.
Five police cars arrived at Bradman Ave to back up police officers and corner the man.
The 20-year-old man was eventually arrested after a 30-minute pursuit, but police still had no idea why he ran.
"The man looked familiar to police and was acting suspiciously in the hotel so officers tried to approach the man in the venue to speak with him," Snr Const Moore said
"No officers were injured in the incident, but we will be investigating as to why the man was avoiding police."
The man was in custody last night after being charged with assaulting and obstructing police.
It is believed he is also on parole for other matters.
Police were interviewing the charged man last night in relation to the identity of the driver.
