Police Commissioner says city safe despite suspicious death

POLICE continue to appeal for public information about the death of young woman, believed to be a French student, in Brisbane on Friday as they try to contact her next of kin.

The girl, believed to be in her late teens or early 20s, is believed to have died in suspicious circumstances before she was found near the Kurilpa Bridge.

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said on Tuesday he would not confirm where the woman was from until they had been able to speak to her family.

Responding to media questions about the deaths of other foreign tourists in the past four months, Mr Stewart said the city was still safe.

"Any tragedy like this will always have an impact on visitors to our city as it will have on our residents," he said.

"We're doing everything in our power to keep all of the community safe, that means tourists and residents alike.

"We ask people to take note of their surroundings and act appropriately.

"If they're concerned about any issues they can contact us.

"Any violence in our city is a tragedy and something we take very seriously

"The current matter, the lady who passed away under Kurilpa Bridge last Friday, is still under investigation.

"Our hearts go out to the victim's extended family."

Mr Stewart would not confirm whether police were close to laying any charges, saying only that police were still analysing information from searches in recent days.

He encouraged anyone with information in relation to the death to come forward.

"We're very grateful for the information passed on by member of the public in relation to the investigation of the death," he said.

"We can't work by ourselves in isolation, we need that support from the community."
