Police chief denies 'selfie moment' with Bali Nine duo

A PHOTO of Bali's police chief posing in a photo with Australian Bali Nine prisoners Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan shows "a lack of dignity" according to the Federal Government, which has now complained to the Indonesian ambassador.

Photographs of the police chief posing with the Australians on a plane as they were flown to an isolated island ahead of their execution made the rounds in national media earlier this week.

The photos were also included in Indonesia's own news coverage of the Australians' transfer.

Senior government sources told the Sydney Morning Herald, the complaint also referred to Indonesia's excessive use of force, military presence and a "lack of dignity shown" to the two Australians on death row.

Indonesia ambassador Bapak Nadjib Riphat Kesoema was telephoned by an official from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on Thursday.

He was called into DFAT to be given the complaint.

Reportedly, Australia's embassy in Jakarta will also make a complaint.

The man in the photos -- Senior Commissioner Djoko Hari Utomo -- has previously told Fairfax that he was attempting to support the two Australians when the pictures were taken.

"It was not a selfie moment," he said.

He was instead telling the Australian prisoners to "be tough, be strong and keep going".
