Bloodshot eyes a give away in drug bust

AN ENGLISHMAN, a Taiwanese man and a Japanese man have fallen foul of the law after police found cannabis, hash cookies and LSD caps in their car.

The tourists were driving on Tenterfield St in Wallangarra, south of Stanthorpe, when stopped by police about 4.30pm on Thursday last week.

Stanthorpe police officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said the eyes of the 31-year-old driver, from Japan, appeared bloodshot.

"Police detected a smell of cannabis in the car and as a result it was searched," Snr Sgt Ireland said.

Officers searched the car and found 160g of cannabis in clip seal bags in the boot.

Snr Sgt Ireland said five hash cookies, some brass cone pieces and five LSD capsules were also found in the vehicle.

The Japanese man was charged with possessing a dangerous drug and possession of utensils.

The English national and the Taiwan national, both 29, were also charged with possession of a dangerous drug.

They are due to front the Stanthorpe Magistrates Court next month.

Snr Sgt Ireland said the incident was part of a busy week of drug arrests. "Search warrants on three premises, two in Stanthorpe and one in Wallangarra, resulted in the seizure of cannabis, amphetamines and drug paraphernalia while similar property was located during the search of seven vehicles, four in Stanthorpe and three in Wallangarra."

He said the 12 people were due to face Stanthorpe Magistrates Court next month.
