Police charge 11 over Gatton prison incident

POLICE have charged 11 people with rioting related offences after five prisoners climbed onto the roof of the Southern Queensland Correctional Centre earlier this month.

Police will allege at approximately 1.15pm on May 5, the five prisoners climbed from the exercise yard onto the roof of the facility.

After negotiations, the prisoners climbed off the roof around 2am and were taken into police custody

Police have charged the prisoners with one count each of unlawful assemble, riot or mutiny under the corrective services act.

They will appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court on June 3.

After further investigations, police have charged six more prisoners with one count each of unlawful assembly, riot or mutiny (under the Corrective Services Act), and two with one count each of wilful damage.

They will appear in Ipswich Magistrates Court on June 17.
